Purpose and Conventions of Album Digipaks

What is a Digipak? -
  • A type of packaging for DVDs or CDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more disc.
  • They are more vulnerable and likely to wear unlike other cases and packaging's
  • They became popular with artists and record labels in the early 2000s

Conventions of a Digipak -
  • Track list
  • Album artwork
  • Record label
  • Extra information
  • Barcode
  • Artist/album name
  • The normally have a gatefold like a book
  • The outer packaging is made from card/paper and the inner packaging from plastic

Purpose of a Digipak -
  • To promote an album
  • To list the content of the album
  • To make the CD eye catching so more people buy it
  • To use to corporate identity of the artist/band as a recurring theme
  • To tell us something about the musician and the music behind them
  • To use art and images to express a message
  • To store additional promotional materials, such as sleeves within the digipak could include booklets and posters
  • To attract not only fans of the music but a wider audience
